Denial of Death

Denial of DeathDenial of Death"What does it mean 'to be born again' for man? It means for the first time to be subjected to the terrifying paradox of the human condition, since one must be born not as a god, but as a man...or a god who shits."
~ Ernest Becker
We love to not think about, and even deny, the fragility of life and our mortality. To paraphrase author Ernest Becker, we don’t want to admit that, like other animals, our bodies are ultimately food for worms. He goes on to say that this self-awareness and our cognitive abilities make us like little gods who shit. Denying our mortality works great until we are directly confronted with it. I had one of those confrontations last week when I had a (scheduled) procedure on my heart. The recovery continues to be a little rougher than I expected, and sometimes a little disconcerting. After all, I only have one heart! So, I am left to challenge and double-down in my faith, ponder big metaphysical issues, and renew my relationships. Could be worse!
